-
- Exactly; what mystifies me is why they expect this to be different from any
- other social environment. When I meet new people, I tend to be polite
- and cautious until I know what social rules they work under, moreso if
- they're foreign.

-
- No.
-
- When I use a word, *I* may be trying to say almost anything, but the meaning
- is already out there. I may use the word incorrectly, or you may
- misunderstand it, but the meaning is externally set.
-
- In terms of the whole "correct behavior" thing, it's not a question of
- interpretation. Those do legitimately come up; this is not one of them.
- Interpretation issues are things like whether a post bashing Windows 95
- is on-topic in comp.os.linux.advocacy. The original issue here is one
- of whether or not you are expected to read the FAQ before posting, which
- is *not* a question of interpretation.
-

-
- I wasn't the person who had been vitriolic to begin with. I was just
- responding to an incorrect summary of authority and permission.
-
- It's not that *I* decided certain things were off topic; I am merely
- one of the people who informs people of this. The poster I responded
- to seemed to think that posters who correct such mistakes are trying
- to make rules, rather than enforce them.
